BERLIN - Delegates to the 74th INTERPOL General Assembly have elected five new members to the Executive Committee, which supervises the execution of the decisions of the General Assembly and oversees the work of the INTERPOL General Secretariat in Lyon, France.

The new members are as follows:

  • Vice President for Asia: U.S. Misra (India);
  • Delegates for Europe: Dr Juergen Stock, Vice-President of the German Bundeskriminalamt (BKA), and Francisco Aranda Guerrero, Chief Inspector and Head of the International Police Co-operation Unit of the Spanish National Police;
  • Delegate for Africa: Mahmoud Mohand Amokrane, Police Chief Inspector and Secretary General at National Police Headquarters in Algeria;
  • Delegate for the Americas: Zulmar Pimentel dos Santos, Executive Director of the Brazilian Federal Police.

The outgoing members of the committee, whose terms have ended, are P.C. Sharma (India), Mireille Ballestrazzi (France), Juris Jasinkevics (Latvia), Genaro García Luna (Mexico) and General Mohamed Ibrahim MOHAMED (Egypt).

The INTERPOL Executive Committee meets three times a year, usually in March, July and immediately before the annual General Assembly. It has 13 members, comprising the president of the organization, three vice-presidents and nine delegates. These members are elected by the General Assembly and should belong to different countries. In addition, the president and the three vice-presidents must come from different regions.

The president is elected for four years and vice-presidents for three. They are not immediately eligible for re-election either to the same posts or as delegates to the Executive Committee.

Voting is done by secret ballot. A two-thirds majority is required for the election of the president. If this majority is not obtained after the second ballot, a simple majority is then sufficient. Vice-presidents and delegates are elected by a simple majority.

Each member state has one vote and all member states attending the General Assembly are eligible to take part in the election, provided they are not prevented from doing so under Article 52 of the General Regulations.
