INTERPOL recognizes the need to prepare the next generation of global police leaders to effectively combat international crime – now and in the future. This is why we set up the Young Global Police Leaders Programme (YGPLP) in 2019.
The Programme informs over 35 young police leaders from around the world about emerging trends in policing, and provides them with mentoring from experienced senior officers and qualified experts.
Placing an emphasis on innovation, preparedness and agility, the Programme highlights the need to develop a global professional network across law enforcement, as well as to jointly identify potential solutions and recommendations for present law enforcement leaders.

INTERPOL Young Global Police Leaders: Policing in the World of AI
Addressing the law enforcement challenges created by technology
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Young police leaders from 34 INTERPOL member countries gathered to learn from seasoned law enforcement experts and speakers under the theme ‘Policing in the World of AI’.
Co-hosted by Dubai Police, the 4th INTERPOL Young Global Police Leaders Programme (YGPLP) facilitated knowledge exchange, group exercises, and international network building from 25 to 29 August 2024.
In his welcoming remarks, INTERPOL Secretary General Jürgen Stock highlighted the importance of innovation, collaboration, and a global perspective in using AI in law enforcement.
The fourth edition’s coaches who guided the 40 participants in developing proposed solutions and recommendations to pertinent law enforcement issues include Dr Zena Assaad, Senior Lecturer at the School of Engineering of the Australian National University, Mr Dominic Reese, Head of the Innovation Lab, State Police Force North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany, and Dr Major Rawdha Alshamsi, Vice President of Dubai Police Scientists Council and Head of the Clinical Section of the Forensic Medicine Department at Dubai Police.
The young leaders learned from expert presentations on key considerations on the intersection and implementation of AI, emerging technologies, and modern law enforcement.
Participants also delved into the issue of generative AI and its impact on policing. With the proliferation of generative AI tools and platforms, law enforcement agencies face a challenging synthetic media landscape. In June INTERPOL published the report on ‘Beyond Illusions: Unmasking the Threat of Synthetic Media for Law Enforcement’ which provided member countries with an overview of potential threats arising from synthetic photos, videos, and other content.
The Programme also facilitated workshops on futures and foresight thinking for leaders, what to consider in becoming a future-ready police force in the era of AI, and thinking like a criminal in the world of AI.
As their Programme outcome, the young leaders developed potential use cases of AI by law enforcement, criminal business models which misuse AI, and strategies to engage the community in police use of AI.
In its fourth edition, the ever-growing Programme welcomed 10 member countries which have participated for the first time; Antigua and Barbuda, Brunei, Canada, Gambia, Iraq, Kyrgyzstan, Liberia, Malta, Pakistan and Qatar.

The next generation of law enforcement leadership gathered in India for the third edition, and first alumni edition, of YGPLP. Central to the discussions was the issue of building and maintaining trust in the midst of digital disruption.
Second edition, 2022

Building on the success of the inaugural YGPLP event, held in Dubai in September 2019, the second edition was also hosted by the Dubai Police. Underlining the innovative nature of the Programme, the event took place inside the World Expo 2020.
In line with the theme of the Expo – ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future,’ – the second YGPLP highlighted the importance of international police cooperation and knowledge exchange.

The Programme brought together 31 participants from law enforcement agencies in 27 countries, creating a strong network to tackle the challenges facing police in the future.
