Case name: The woman with the German keys
Case code: 2024-NL10
The case
It was raining on Sunday, 4 July 2004, the day of the final match of the UEFA European Football Championship 2004, when Greece beat Portugal. The Tour de France bicycle race had started a day earlier in Liège, Belgium. Late that Sunday afternoon, a man walking through the dunes near the remote Wassenaar beach, near the Meijendel area, noticed a woman lying in the sand, close to beach post 93.
The woman was wearing clothing predominantly sold in Germany and Switzerland and was noticeably wearing several layers of clothes, possibly due to the wet and cold weather at the time. She was found with three keys on a blue carabiner keyring, which were German brands.
Despite extensive police investigations, the case remained unresolved, and the woman's identity remained a mystery. With no new leads, the authorities in the Netherlands submitted the case to INTERPOL's Identify Me in 2024.
The identification
The woman with the German keys was identified in 2025 as Eva Maria Pommer.
A crucial breakthrough came in 2025 when the Dutch cold case and missing persons team in The Hague received a significant tip, leading to an acceleration of the investigation in the German city of Bottrop, not far from the Dutch-German border.
Subsequent DNA testing confirmed her identity.
Ongoing investigation
While the cause of death remains unexplained, investigators have not ruled out the possibility of a crime. As a result, the Dutch authorities are continuing their investigation and urging the public to come forward with any information they may have regarding Eva Maria Pommer, particularly in relation to the summer of 2004.
If you have any information regarding the possible identity of this person, please contact the national police.
