Guatemala’s President and INTERPOL Chief discuss collaboration

LYON, France – International police collaboration against transnational crime was the focus of a meeting between Guatemala’s President Jimmy Morales Cabrera and Secretary General Jürgen Stock at INTERPOL’s General Secretariat headquarters.

Discussions during President Morales Cabrera’s visit focused on a range of transnational policing issues, including counter-terrorism and border security.

Underlining Guatemala’s 68-year partnership with the world’s largest international police organization, President Morales Cabrera said his country’s nationwide use of INTERPOL’s global policing capabilities and active involvement in its crime-fighting projects were testimony to the country’s resolve to detect, deter and disrupt transnational crime.

“The INTERPOL National Central Bureau in Guatemala will continue to play a key role in dealing with threats to national and international security, particularly as it relates to terrorism and regional organized crime,” said President Morales Cabrera.

“For this reason I am delighted to pay an official visit to INTERPOL’s General Secretariat headquarters to hear at first hand their experiences in dealing with these crucial global crime issues,” added Guatemala’s President.

The two leaders also discussed areas of ongoing cooperation in strengthening Guatemala’s law enforcement capacity to identify, investigate and tackle security threats facing the country.

“It is an honour for INTERPOL to receive the President of Guatemala at its General Secretariat headquarters. Guatemala is to be commended for its commitment to enhancing international law enforcement collaboration, and working with its counterparts globally and through INTERPOL to make the world a safer place,” said Secretary General Stock.

“Our talks show we have a shared vision on how to address the policing challenges facing Guatemala and Latin America, and how INTERPOL’s global network can continue providing its support,” added the INTERPOL Chief.

President Morales Cabrera’s delegation included Carlos Raúl Morales Moscoso, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Julio Héctor Estrada Domínguez, Minister of Finance, and Marco Tulio Gustavo Chicas Sosa, Ambassador of Guatemala to France.
