Law enforcement in Montenegro is the responsibility of the Police Directorate, an agency under the authority of the Ministry of Interior and Public Administration.

Headquartered in the Montenegrin capital Podgorica, the Police Directorate has a strength of 5,250 officers who provide security and enforce the law across the country. The National Police Academy is located in Danilovgrad, 18km northwest of Podgorica.

INTERPOL Podgorica

The INTERPOL National Central Bureau for Montenegro focuses its daily activities around:

  • Publication of INTERPOL international notices for persons wanted by the Montenegrin courts;
  • Publication of INTERPOL international notices for missing persons;
  • Coordination with national law enforcement agencies in locating fugitives thought to be hiding in Montenegro;
  • Coordination with national law enforcement agencies and INTERPOL member countries in locating missing persons thought to be in Montenegro;
  • Coordination with national law enforcement agencies and INTERPOL member countries with regard to persons likely to pose a security threat or commit crime;
  • Publication of INTERPOL international notices for unidentified bodies;
  • Establishing the identity of suspects;
  • Coordination of full extradition procedures regarding fugitives wanted by INTERPOL and either located in or wanted by Montenegro;
  • Cooperation with national law enforcement agencies and INTERPOL member countries in conducting international criminal investigations, primarily in the fields of:
    • Organized crime (financial organized crime, general organized crime, trafficking in human beings, smuggling of human beings, terrorism, etc.);
    • General crime;
    • Smuggling of motor vehicles (checks, locating, seizing and returning the vehicles to their rightful owners);
    • Commercial crime;
    • Drug trafficking.

Extending access to INTERPOL's tools and services

Access to INTERPOL's criminal databases enables INTERPOL Podgorica to carry out these tasks effectively and provide a tailored police service to its national law enforcement partners.

As part of a strategy to boost national security and prevent criminal activity in Montenegro, INTERPOL Podgorica provided Montenegrin police across the country – and particularly at border points – with “Mobile INTERPOL Network Database” (MIND) systems.  This means that police across Montenegro now have hands-on access to critical data on wanted persons, vehicles and stolen and lost travel documents in just seconds.

In the near future, INTERPOL Podgorica plans to make INTERPOL databases accessible to police in the field via mobile telephones, smart phones and in police cars, thus ensuring that police in the field can quickly determine if a person is a potential threat to national security.
