INTERPOL Chief at Europol launch of Joint Operational Team against irregular migration

THE HAGUE, Netherlands – A Joint Operational Team (JOT) targeting organized crime groups behind illegal migration via the Mediterranean sea was launched today at the Europol headquarters in The Hague.

In addition to actively facilitating the transport of irregular migrants, these crime networks have also been linked to human trafficking, drugs, firearms and terrorism.

JOT Mare will combine intelligence resources and national capabilities to carry out coordinated and intelligence-driven actions against the organized criminal groups facilitating irregular migration, in conjunction with close cooperation with INTERPOL and stronger information exchange with Frontex.

In his first official visit to Europol, INTERPOL Secretary General Jürgen Stock met with Director Rob Wainwright on the sidelines of the launch to discuss a range of other crime areas where the two organizations already work closely together.
