Enhancing resilience against biological threats focus of INTERPOL workshop

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina – Improving the safety, security, and surveillance structures around biosciences and related emerging technologies was the focus of an INTERPOL Operation S3OMMET workshop for South American countries.

Conducted in cooperation with the International Federation for Biosafety Associations (IFBA), and the Connecting Organizations for Regional Disease Surveillance (CORDS), the three-day (2 – 4 December) workshop brought together nearly 60 representatives from law enforcement, public health, biosafety and biosecurity and the scientific community.

In light of the current Ebola outbreak the meeting organised by INTERPOL’s Bioterrorism prevention unit highlighted the need for more effective communication and cooperation between the various sectors, and provided an opportunity for participants to create their own national working groups on biosecurity and biosafety.
