6th International Expert Meeting on Genocide, War Crimes and Crimes against Humanity

14-16 April 2014, Kigali, Rwanda

This meeting was hosted and supported by the Rwandan national police in the year 2014 when the world commemorated the 20th anniversary of the genocide in Rwanda.

The aim of the conference was to enhance the cooperation and the exchange of information in the investigation and prosecution of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Discussions centred around the theme “Closing the impunity gap”. Experts from INTERPOL member countries, international organizations, civil society organizations, academia and the media met to share experience, knowledge and contacts with a view to enhancing operational cooperation and building partnerships.

Participants presented and discussed the latest developments in various countries and organizations concerning fact finding, investigations, prosecutions, training, best practices, capacity building and measures to combat impunity with regard to the most serious international crimes, or to prevent them.

This conference was part of INTERPOL’s ongoing support in developing global expertise in the area of the investigation of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity. At the close of the meeting, participants adopted a set of recommendations for improving the global response to genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.
