Law enforcement services in Austria are provided by the Directorate General for Public Security, a department of the Federal Ministry of the Interior.

Nine regional police directorates report directly to the Federal Interior Ministry, providing police services through local, city or district commands. With a strength of nearly 28,000 men and women serving in the country’s nine states, the force is in charge of 774 police stations and 94 specialized stations (for example, dog handlers, traffic police, and so on).

  • Upper Austria;
  • Vienna;
  • Vorarlberg.

Directorate-General for Public Security:

  • Austrian Criminal Intelligence Service (Bundeskriminalamt);
  • Federal Bureau for State Protection and Counter Terrorism;
  • Operations and Crisis Coordination Centre;
  • Special Operations Unit Cobra;
  • Special Operations Unit Surveillance;
  • Police Air Support;
  • Operational Affairs;
  • Immigration Police and Border Control;
  • Federal Police (Bundespolizei).

INTERPOL Vienna

The National Central Bureau (NCB) for Austria is part of the Austrian Criminal Intelligence Service (CIS) at the Federal Ministry of the Interior. INTERPOL Vienna police officers work at the following NCB crime desks:

  • Crime Strategy;
  • International Police Cooperation (National Units INTERPOL, Europol, Sirene);
  • Investigations, Organised Crime and General Crime;
  • Crime Analysis;
  • CID Support Services;
  • Forensics;
  • Economic Crime.
