The Gambia Police Force (GPF)



The Gambia Police Force (GPF) is part of the Ministry of the Interior and has a force of about 5,000 uniformed and plain-clothes police officers.  The GPF is commanded by an Inspector General of Police who is assisted by a Deputy Inspector General, Administrative and the Regional Commissioners.

The Banjul-located GPF headquarters are made up of:

As part of the GPF headquarters structure, the INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB) for The Gambia is headed by a Commissioner who is assisted by an Assistant Supintendent of Police in carying out the daily NCB duties.


  • Serve as the exclusive national platform for criminal investigations requiring international outreach;
  • Gather criminal intelligence for the benefit of domestic law enforcement and the INTERPOL community;

The above desks also work on specifically regional issues which include:

  • Crimes committed against children;
  • Use of stolen and lost travel documents;
  • War crime fugitives;
  • Extraditions;
  • Kidnapping;
  • Maritime piracy;
  • Intellectual property crime
  • Organized crimes and criminal organizations
  • Environmental & wildlife crime.

Daily duties:

  • Gather and share criminal information with a view to locating and tracing suspects, wanted persons and fugitives;
  • Obtain foreign criminal information on individuals under investigation;
  • Verify the identity and obtain criminal records of suspects arrested in The Gambia;
  • Coordinate the extradition and deportation of wanted persons, fugitives and persons under investigations by member states;
  • Verify the identities of persons under investigation; 
  • Transmit intelligence and information to law enforcement agencies and judicial authorities.

As part of a national effort to secure Gambian borders, the NCB is working on providing national law enforcement in the seven regions of the country with access to INTERPOL databases.   This will enable frontline officers to check passports, vehicles and individuals directly against INTERPOL databases and quickly detect dangers or identify potential criminals.

In partnership with The Gambia’s Intervention Unit, INTERPOL Banjul conducts regular field operations in strategic areas, resulting in the regular apprehension of drug smugglers who are handed over to the National Drug Enforcement Agency.
