Cultural heritage has been destroyed, looted and trafficked throughout history, particularly during conflict and post-conflict situations. Today, these phenomena are increasingly linked to international criminal activity including the financing of terrorist groups.
Protecting Cultural Heritage is a joint initiative between the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Jordan and Italy in cooperation with UNESCO, INTERPOL and UNODC.
Following a series of meetings, participants have drawn up a list of key actions, published in the brochure Protecting Cultural Heritage, an Imperative for Humanity. These recommendations are based on the outcomes of the meetings; the comprehensive guidelines adopted to support the implementation of the 1970 UNESCO Convention and the UN Convention on Transnational Organized Crime; and the priorities of experts working in the field.
The initiative has also included a photo exhibition at the UN Headquarters in New York to highlight a number of stolen and recovered cultural items.
