LYON, France – From 10 - 12 April 2018, INTERPOL President Meng Hongwei participated in the 14th Annual Heads of INTERPOL National Central Bureaus Conference, which was held under the theme of ‘NCBs: the Gateways to Modern Policing – The Future is Now.’
Opening the conference, Mr. Meng welcomed senior officials representing 145 member countries, with a particularly warm welcome to the delegations from INTERPOL’s two newest member countries, the State of Palestine and the Solomon Islands.
He described the National Central Bureau (NCB) as a primary component of the Organization and the main channel for INTERPOL’s core activities. He stressed the importance of developing this unique advantage.
The increase in searches against INTERPOL’s databases - and resulting hits - have shown that the Organization is growing stronger. It has also highlighted drastic changes in crime.
The President shared his strategic views on evolutions in the crime landscape, which are characterized by globalization, virtualization, technology and ideology. This new era calls for a future-oriented global strategy based on cooperative policing, in which law enforcement works with governments, international organizations, the private sector and across police forces. As INTERPOL President reiterated that the establishment of a Strategic Studies Centre could help achieve this important objective.
On the sidelines of the event, the INTERPOL President held bilateral meetings with the heads of delegations from Burkina Faso, East Timor, Iran, Japan, Palestine and Serbia. Discussions focused on the changing threat landscape faced by each country’s law enforcement and how INTERPOL could provide support on operational and strategic issues. Bilaterals futher explored how member countries could contribute to INTERPOL’s overall objectives by seconding national experts to the General Secretariat.
President Meng also had a meeting with Nguyen Van Thanh, Deputy Minister of Public Security of Vietnam , where they broached the importance of international cooperation in tackling new forms of crime.
The Annual Heads of National Central Bureaus remains a major event in INTERPOL’s calendar, as it is a key opportunity for member countries to develop closer cooperation and develop better understanding of the challenges they face at national level. This week’s exchanges have led to a more strategic and tailor-made approach to maintaining global security.
