Certifying stadium security standards focus of INTERPOL meeting

٢٢ مايو، ٢٠١٨

LYON, France – Developing an international stadium licensing and certification system was the focus of a two-day (2 and 3 May) stadium safety and security meeting at INTERPOLs General Secretariat headquarters.

/

The 1st Working Group Meeting on Stadium Safety and Security Licensing and Certification sought to develop safety and security policies, procedures and tools to support Qatar’s efforts to license and certify stadiums for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

A core component of INTERPOL Project Stadia is to create a Centre of Excellence to help INTERPOL member countries in planning and executing policing and security preparations for major sporting events.

To achieve this, Project Stadia organizes expert group meetings which bring together global experts from law enforcement, event organizing committees, government, the private sector, academia and civil society to explore state-of-the-art research and analysis and develop independent recommendations for planning and executing security arrangements for major international sporting events.

The Working Group is composed of recognized experts in the field of safety and security of major sporting events and has the responsibility to develop stadium safety and security licensing and certification standards to assist Qatar while also delivering a lasting legacy for all INTERPOL member countries.

The experts are drawn from a range of national and international organizations which are leaders in the field of stadium design, assurance and certification and also have significant experience in developing and delivering standards and guidance material related to sporting event safety and security.

These will then be adapted for use internationally and made available to all of INTERPOL’s 192 member countries through the Project Stadia Knowledge Management System (SKMS).

Participating organizations included:

  • European Stadium and Safety Management Association (ESSMA)
  • National Centre for Spectator Sport Safety and Security ( NCS4)
  • Council of Europe
  • Sports Ground Safety Authority (SGSA)
  • Qatar’s Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy
