With the meeting occurring against a backdrop of evolving international security challenges, Secretary General Stock thanked the outgoing UN Secretary General for his strong support of INTERPOL during his term of office.

“The partnership between INTERPOL and the UN recognizes the fundamental role of international law enforcement in shaping security for citizens worldwide through a collective response to transnational crime,” said the Head of INTERPOL.

Mr Stock said the adoption yesterday of a UN General Assembly resolution enhancing collaboration between the UN and INTERPOL will facilitate increased opportunities for partnership and greater awareness about INTERPOL among all UN member states.

The resolution adopted during the 71st session of the UN General Assembly calls for enhanced cooperation between the UN and INTERPOL, within their respective mandates, in tackling terrorism, including preventing foreign terrorist fighter travel, and combating all forms of transnational crime.

INTERPOL and the UN have a long-standing relationship, with the two organizations collaborating on projects and initiatives against international crime and terrorism.

The world police body became a permanent observer at the UN in 1997. In 2004, INTERPOL established its office of the Special Representative to the United Nations in New York.
