Hundreds of stolen vehicles recovered in Europe-wide operation supported by INTERPOL

An Europe-wide operation targeting vehicle crime has so far led to the recovery of 323 stolen vehicles worth more than EUR 5 million and 469 arrests.

More than 375,000 checks were carried out during the three-day (7 – 9 October) joint police operation ITACAR led by Italy and supported by INTERPOL’s dedicated Stolen Motor Vehicle (SMV) task force, Switzerland, Europol, Frontex and Tispol.

Deployed to strategic locations at ports in Genova, Naples and Trieste, in addition to running checks against INTERPOL’s  SMV database which contains nearly seven million entries, the INTERPOL Task Force was also able to access car manufacturer and registration offices databases.

Nearly half of the vehicles recovered had been reported stolen by rental companies, and with many identified destination countries outside of Europe, including in Africa, Asia and the Middle East INTERPOL’s SMV unit is liaising with all involved member countries for investigative follow-up.
