Law enforcement services in Malta are provided by the Malta Police Force (MPF).

The force is in charge of national security, crime prevention and crime investigation on the main island of Malta and its neighboring islands Gozo and Comino. 

With a strength of more than 2,000 serving members, MPF is headed by a Commissioner of Police and forms part of the Ministry for Home Affairs and National Security. 

MPF mandate:

  • arbitration services;
  • aviation security;
  • correctional services;
  • crime prevention, detection and investigation;
  • immigration and asylum-related issues;
  • judicial services ;
  • law and order.

MPF deploys officers to police stations across the islands or to the Police headquarters (HQ) where they provide national security, crime prevention and investigation services.

HQ structure:

  • Administration;
  • Criminal Investigations;
  • Drugs;
  • Protective Services;
  • Special Branch (which houses INTERPOL Floriana);
  • Economic Crime.


The INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB) for Malta is part of the Special Branch International Relations Unit.  It is the country’s unique cooperation platform linking domestic law enforcement with the INTERPOL community.

The NCB is headed by a Police Inspector with command of six police officers who manage all INTERPOL activities linked to Malta.

NCB duties include:

  • 24h contact for all INTERPOL member countries;
  • Supporting international investigations linked to Malta;
  • Coordinating the exchange of  criminal data between domestic law enforcement units and INTERPOL NCBs;
  • Working with NCBs in investigating crime either committed in Malta or by Maltese criminals abroad;
  • Helping locate fugitives and missing people in Malta and abroad.
