Part of the Ministry of Public Security (MPS), Vietnam’s national police is an armed force established in July 1962 to provide law enforcement services nationwide.

The force is made up of six units:

  • Criminal Sentence Enforcement and Legal Assistance;
  • Fire Fighting and Rescue Police;
  • General Police;
  • Mobile Police High Command;
  • Police units under provincial and district public security agencies;
  • Traffic Police.


  • advise government on policing and law enforcement issues;
  • oversee sentencing and conviction processes and provide legal support services;
  • locate and apprehend criminals and fugitives;
  • maintain law and order through the prevention, detection and investigation of
  • crime;
  • protect people and property;
  • provide fire protection, prevention and rescue services;
  • provide special weapons and police tactics services;
  • provide traffic control and safety services.


INTERPOL’s National Central Bureau (NCB) for Vietnam, which also serves as the MPS Department of Foreign Relations, is the primary law enforcement platform for Vietnamese police investigations requiring cooperation with other countries.

The NCB’s principal responsibilities include:

  • working with domestic, regional and international partners in developing events and programs to boost Vietnam’s ability to identify and prevent transnational crime;
  • providing intelligence support to domestic law enforcement units when investigations require global outreach;
  • coordinating the arrest and extradition of fugitives located in Vietnam, and of Vietnamese fugitives located in INTERPOL member countries;
  • working with all member countries for matters relating to mutual legal assistance on criminal matters and extradition.
