Myanmar Police Force

Established in 1995, the Myanmar Police Force is part of the Ministry of Home Affairs. With a strength of 75,000 men and women, the force is headquartered in the capital Nay Pyi Taw.  

Myanmar is divided into seven states and seven regions, each with its own local police force.

Each state and divisional police force is made up of four components:

  • Office of the Commander of the State and Divisional Police Force;
  • Office of the Commander of the District Police Force ;
  • Office of the Commander of the Township Police Force;
  • Police Stations.

Specialised departments of the Myanmar Police Force include:

  • Anti- Trafficking in Persons Division;
  • Aviation Police ;
  • City Development Police Department;
  • Criminal Investigation Department;
  • Drug Enforcement Division;
  • Financial Intelligence Unit;
  • Forest Security Police;
  • Highway Police;
  • Maritime Police Force;
  • Oil Field Security Police;
  • Railways Police Department;
  • Special Intelligence Department (Special Branch) ;
  • Tourism Police;
  • Traffic Police.


Located at the Police Headquarters, the INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB) for Myanmar focusses its activities mainly on fighting

  • drug trafficking;
  • trafficking in human beings;
  • money laundering;
  • terrorism.

The NCB’s main objectives are to:

  • serve as the principle communication platform for Myanmar and the INTERPOL law enforcement community;
  • assist in international investigations involving Myanmar;
  • assist international investigations with input from Myanmar police authorities;
  • work with partner NCBs in tracing, investigating and prosecuting transnational crime;
  • analyse crime and identify emerging trends which pose a threat to peace and security;
  • boost the Myanmar police force’s training capacity.

INTERPOL Nay Pyi Taw has a staff of 10 police officers.
