BNI is Germany’s National Reference Centre for Tropical Infections. The institute offers a unique interdisciplinary surrounding with work on tropical viruses, vector-transmitted diseases, immunology, cell biology and pathophysiology.

The Department of Virology I is engaged in research, the quality control of vaccines, and reference activities related to hemorrhagic fever viruses, arboviruses, neuroviruses, herpes viruses, Rickettsia and Chlamydia. The Canadian Science Centre for Human and Animal Health (CSCHAH) in Winnipeg consists of the National Microbiology Laboratories (NML) and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) Laboratories. The Centre represents an international resource as the first facility in the world with both animal and human BSL 4 laboratories.
