Law enforcement services in Sri Lanka are provided by the Sri Lanka Police Service (SLPS), a national police agency with a strength of more than 89,000 men and women. The force is headed by an Inspector General of Police who reports to the Minister of Defence.

SLPS mandate:

  • Crime prevention, detection and investigation;
  • National security (including counter-terrorism, public order, intelligence services, VIP security, prison transport services);
  • Traffic control;
  • Emergency services;
  • Community policing.

SLPS structure includes:

  • Children & Women Bureau;
  • Counter Terrorism;
  • Criminal Investigation Department ;
  • Diplomatic Security Division;
  • Judicial Security Division;
  • Marine Division;
  • Mounted Police
  • Police Kennels;
  • Police Narcotic Bureau;
  • President, Prime Minister and Minister Security Divisions;
  • Riot Squad;
  • Special Investigation Unit;
  • Special Task Force;
  • Sri Lanka Police College;
  • State Intelligence Service;
  • Traffic Police.

Other domestic law enforcement agencies include:

  • Sri Lanka Customs;
  • Immigration & Emigration;
  • Sri Lanka Navy;
  • Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption;
  • Forest Conservation;
  • Excise Department.

INTERPOL Colombo

Under the command of a Deputy Inspector General of Police, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is the national unit which investigates serious and organized crime.  The INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB) for Sri Lanka is a CID unit. The Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the CID is also the Head of NCB.

INTERPOL Colombo links domestic law enforcement units to INTERPOL’s global network, working with its partner NCBs across the world in supporting and conducting international police investigations.  INTERPOL Colombo is Sri Lanka’s law enforcement platform for international fugitive investigations.
