No caption 2 (1)

Created in 1840 and headed today by a Commissioner who answers to the Minister of National Security, the Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF) is made up of more than 3,000 police officers, reserves and police civilians.

The Commissioner is supported by a Deputy Commissioner and five Assistant Commissioners. Together, they make up the Executive Management Team which sets strategic Force objectives, policing plans, development and mobilization.

  • Maintenance of law and order;
  • Preservation of the peace;
  • Prevention, detection and investigation of crime;
  • Apprehension of offenders;
  • Enforcement of all laws with which it is charged.

The RBPF is organized into three districts of responsibility:

  • New Providence;
  • Grand Bahama;
  • Family Islands.

As a result of RBPF reorganization in 2006, the INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB) for the Bahamas is now staffed by law enforcement officials from several Bahamian police units, with a Head of NCB who reports directly to the Deputy Commissioner of Police.

  • Six Police officers (including the Head of NCB):
  • Two officers from the Bahamian Immigration Department;
  • One officer from the Royal Bahamas Defence Force.

  • Financial and high-tech crime;
  • Fugitive investigations;
  • Public safety and terrorism;
  • Human trafficking and people smuggling;
  • Stolen and lost travel documents.

  • Serve as the central point of contact for any investigations involving the Bahamas and the international police community;
  • Develop and maintain a working relationship with all law enforcement agencies in the Bahamas.
  • Facilitate cross-border cooperation with INTERPOL member countries;
  • Assist INTERPOL member countries with criminal investigations;
  • Implement systems so as to monitor passengers and protect the various ports of entries in the Bahamas;
  • Maximize the capabilities of the Global Police Communications System (I-24/7) in the Bahamas.
