Turn Back Crime campaign gets backing of former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani
MIAMI, USA – Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani is adding his voice to the Turn Back Crime campaign, underlining the importance of public engagement in efforts to combat all forms of crime.
“The most effective crime-fighting mechanism in any country is its citizens. So this campaign, Turn Back Crime, is enormously important,” said Mr Giuliani who was Mayor of New York City when the twin towers of the World Trade Center were targeted in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack.
In a video message supporting the campaign, Mr Giuliani underlines the importance of raising public awareness of the potential links between all forms of crime and terrorism, such as counterfeiting, smuggling, money laundering and even white-collar crime.
“It isn’t just the police, prosecutors, courts and prisons, it’s an entire country making the decision that they want to be a lawful country, they want better opportunities for their children,” said Mr Giuliani.
“The only way you’re ever going to really reduce crime is if you get the help of the public,” concluded Mr Giuliani.
Mr Giuliani’s support for the Turn Back Crime campaign comes after it was presented to some 350 senior government, law enforcement and industry officials from 90 countries attending the FBI-INTERPOL International Law Enforcement Critical Infrastructure Symposium in Miami.
Executive Director of the Turn Back Crime campaign, Roraima A. Andriani, welcomed Mr Giuliani’s backing.
“As the Mayor of New York when the 9/11 attacks occurred, Mr Giuliani witnessed first-hand the effects of terrorism and more importantly the law enforcement response supported by the public,” said Mrs Andriani.
“The Turn Back Crime campaign is aimed at educating and empowering citizens, making them aware of the threats posed to their safety and how they can assist law enforcement in prevention activities and become aware of the often hidden links between crime and terrorism,” concluded Mrs Andriani.
Mr Giuliani becomes the latest supporter of the Turn Back Crime campaign, joining FBI Director James B. Comey, Scuderia Ferrari, Team Ducati, Argentina captain and FC Barcelona striker, Lionel Messi as well as the first Ambassador, film star Jackie Chan.
