El Ministerio del Interior de Uruguay tiene la responsabilidad del mantenimiento del orden público, y cumple también la función de auxiliar de la Justicia.
Las unidades ejecutoras del Ministerio del Interior son:

  • las direcciones generales;
  • las direcciones nacionales;
  • las jefaturas departamentales.

La coordinación entre las instituciones policiales se realiza a través de la Dirección de la Policía Nacional, cuya autoridad máxima es el Director Nacional.

Creada en 1829, la Policía Nacional se compone de más de 27.000 policías. Dentro de la Policía Nacional se encuentran las direcciones generales, las direcciones nacionales divididas por especialidad (ambas direcciones con jurisdicción nacional) y las jefaturas de policía departamentales.

La Policía Nacional se ocupa de la protección de los ciudadanos, a los que garantiza el libre ejercicio de sus derechos y el respeto de sus intereses, en la forma que sea compatible con el derecho de los demás.  Ejerce una actividad de observación y prevención y controla a los delincuentes, infractores o contraventores.

INTERPOL Montevideo

La Dirección General de Lucha Contra el Crimen Organizado e INTERPOL tiene como cometido la persecución, el control y la represión del crimen organizado. 

INTERPOL Montevideo, unidad operativa con jurisdicción y competencias a nivel nacional, es una Dirección General que depende directamente del Ministerio del Interior. Funciona sobre la base de la cooperación y asistencia recíproca con las autoridades de policía criminal de otros países con miras a la prevención y represión de los delitos a nivel internacional.

Cometidos:

  • prevención, control y represión del crimen organizado;
  • prevención y represión de los delitos económicos, informáticos y complejos;
  • colaboración policial con los 190 países miembros de INTERPOL;
  • aplicación de las decisiones de la Asamblea General de INTERPOL;
  • elaboración de un registro de organizaciones y delitos y producción de informes que correspondan a convenios suscritos.

Para realizar sus cometidos INTERPOL Montevideo trabaja en coordinación con los juzgados letrados de primera instancia en materia penal especializados en el crimen organizado, así como con las fiscalías letradas nacionales en materia penal especializadas en ese mismo ámbito.

  • quiebra fraudulenta;
  • insolvencia societaria fraudulenta;
  • tráfico de armas;
  • violencia sexual contra menores o incapaces;
