This two-day operation conducted in March 2012 targeted counterfeit products was facilitated and coordinated by INTERPOL. It led to the seizure of nearly 70,000 fake items in Zambia including toothpaste, agricultural tools and music and movies of domestic African artists.
Nearly a dozen separate raids were conducted in shops, warehouses and at several busy markets in Lusaka, Zambia. These interventions brought together 120 police and customs investigators, representatives of the Intellectual Property Office and the Zambia Bureau of Standards. The expertise brought by each agency representative as well as subject matter expertise provided by brand owners were key to achieving this collective success.
