Maldives

The Maldives Police Services (MPS) was created in 2004 under the Ministry of Home Affairs.   It is responsible for criminal and traffic law, public safety and maintaining law and order throughout the Maldives. 

Objectives:

• To prevent, detect and investigate crime;
• To seize stolen goods and arrest the perpetrators of crime;

The Republic of Maldives is made up of almost 1,200 islands covering an area of 90,000 km2 with a population of 320,000.  Each of the atolls and islands has unique crime issues, ranging from vehicle theft to drug trafficking.  The structure of the Maldives Police Service (MPS) is tailored to reflect this diverse geography and criminal activity.

INTERPOL Male

Staffed by two police officers, The INTERPOL National Central Bureau for the Maldives, based in Male, is part of the MPS National Intelligence Department.  Its mission is to facilitate police cooperation and investigations which involve both the MPS and the international police community.

The NCB is working on a long-term project to connect national law enforcement directly to INTERPOL's criminal databases. This will permit police in the field to be able to identify potential criminals quickly, and prevent them from entering or harming the Maldives territory.
