Operation Bridge
'Migrants who cannot deliver the smuggling fee upon arrival
are detained. Males have their fingers chopped off and mailed to relatives, females
are being raped while their families back in China are on the phone, so that the
family would come up with the money in a hurry.'
This foreword was the guideline for INTERPOL General Secretariat indicating
and verifying the involvement of organized crime in smuggling and trafficking
of persons.
In June 1999 INTERPOL, upon member states request, initiated
Operation Bridge
to facilitate a more effective and efficient program for the collection of
information on organized crime groups and associations involved in alien smuggling,
for improving combat against this form of crime and for undertaking adequate
measures on the prevention and investigation levels.
Operation Bridge is dealing with the organized crime involvement in people smuggling.
INTERPOL is advising all member states and their law enforcement agencies to
participate in the project.
