DNA Profiling
Interpol Handbook on DNA Data Exchange and Practice

The recommendations in this handbook have been formulated by the members of the Interpol DNA Monitoring Expert Group and promote the use of DNA profiling as a powerful tool in criminal investigations.

The overall aim of the handbook is to provide Member States' law enforcement agencies with fundamental advice on the best practice of using DNA profiling. This handbook should also encourage the police and forensic science communities to make the most effective and efficient use of this investigative tool both nationally and internationally, if not already done so.

The topics discussed include:

  • The use of DNA techniques for criminal investigations
  • Intelligence led DNA screening (upon request from law enforcement agencies only)
  • The Interpol DNA database
  • Quality assurance
  • DNA sampling and evidence collection
  • Staff training

This handbook has been printed in the four Interpol official languages: Arabic, English, French and Spanish plus the non-official languages of Chinese and German. A text-only version in Polish is also available on the website. To obtain copies of this handbook with the confidential Chapter 7 please contact the Interpol DNA Unit via your National Central Bureau.

Each Member State was sent the appropriate copies of this handbook.
