Police Parade

Law enforcement services in Tanzania are provided by the Tanzania Police Force (TPF), which is part of the Ministry of Home Affairs.  Led by an Inspector General of Police, five Commissioners head the five departments which make up the force:

  • Administration and Resource Management;
  • Operations;
  • Criminal Investigation;
  • Dar-es-Salaam Special Police Zone;
  • Zanzibar police.

TPF mandate:

  • Maintain law and order;
  • Protect life and property;
  • Prevent, detect and investigate crime.

INTERPOL Dar-es-Salaam

Headed by a Commissioner of Police, the INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB) for Tanzania is part of the Criminal Investigation Department.  It is staffed by 23 TPF police officers
Priority crime areas:

  • Motor vehicle crime;
  • Drugs and organized crime;
  • Intellectual property and works of art;
  • Environmental crime;
  • Terrorism and piracy;
  • Stolen and lost travel documents;
  • Trafficking in human beings and illegal immigration;
  • Crimes against women and children;
  • Trafficking in precious stones and metals;
  • Firearms and explosives;
  • Counterfeit products, including pharmaceuticals;
  • Cattle rustling.

INTERPOL Dar-el-Salaam is the exclusive platform for international investigations requiring input from Tanzanian law enforcement partners.  The NCB’s principal domestic partners include:

  • Tanzania Food and Drugs Authority;
  • Tanzania Police Defense Force;
  • Tanzania Revenue Authority;
  • Fair Competition Commission;
  • National Environment Management Commission;
  • Tanzania Intelligence Security Services;
  • Tanzania National Park Authority;
  • Ministry of Tourism and Natural Resources;
  • Immigration Department.
