Anti-piracy initiatives focus of meeting between Somali officials and INTERPOL

LYON, France – Exploring areas for collaboration was the focus of a meeting between delegates from the Somali Anti-Piracy Task Force (APTF) and INTERPOL’s Maritime Piracy Task Force (MPTF) at the world police body’s General Secretariat headquarters.

During the four-day discussions (16- 19 October), the two Task Forces identified key areas where more direct contact between Somali authorities and INTERPOL would help advance law enforcement efforts against maritime piracy.

A decision by the European Union in February 2011 to fund a EUR 1.6 million project will see INTERPOL provide law enforcement training to Somalia and other Eastern African countries to combat the maritime piracy threat in the region.
