An Garda Síochána – Ireland’s National Police Service 

‘Working with Communities to Protect and Serve’

The Republic of Ireland has one national civilian police force, called “An Garda Síochána” (The Guardians of the Peace of Ireland).  The force, which provides both local and national policing, is commonly referred to as “Garda”.

The Irish Minister for Justice and Law Reform is responsible to the Government for the performance of An Garda Síochána. The Garda Commissioner is responsible for the general direction, management and control of the force.

An Garda Síochána is a community-based organization with more than 12,000 police and civilian employees. Headquartered in Dublin’s Phoenix Park, it is represented throughout the country, listening to, acting for and working with the community.

An Garda Síochána core functions include:

• Crime prevention and detection;
• National security;
• Road safety;
• Working with communities to prevent anti-social behaviour.

INTERPOL Dublin

The INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB) for Ireland is located in the International Liaison Building of the An Garda Síochána Headquarters.    It is part of the International Liaison Section (ILE) which also comprises the Europol National Unit and the Sirene Preparation Unit.  The ILE is also responsible for Garda Liaison Officers working outside of Ireland.

Open seven days a week, INTERPOL Dublin is staffed by almost 20 Garda and civilian staff.
