Law enforcement services in Austria are provided by the Directorate General for Public Security, a department of the Federal Ministry of the Interior.

Nine regional police directorates report directly to the Federal Interior Ministry, providing police services through local, city or district commands. With a strength of 27,500 men and women serving in the country’s nine states, the force is in charge of nearly 900 police stations and more than 80 specialized stations (for example, dog handlers, traffic police, and so on).

INTERPOL Vienna

The National Central Bureau (NCB) for Austria is part of the Austrian Criminal Intelligence Service (CIS) at the Federal Ministry of the Interior. INTERPOL Vienna police officers work at the following NCB crime desks:

  • Crime Strategy;
  • International Police Cooperation (National Units INTERPOL, Europol, Sirene);
  • Investigations, Organised Crime and General Crime;
  • Crime Analysis;
  • CID Support Services;
  • Forensics;
  • Economic Crime.
