In 2010, the Mauritius Police Force (MPF) undertook a reform programme aimed at transforming the “Force” to a “Service” culture, thus paving the way for a fundamentally new policing concept. The objective is to modernize the police service by taking on a new management style and policing philosophy more mindful of public concerns, needs and expectations.
The reform is based on six pillars:
- Community policing;
- Compliancy with human rights;
- Human resource management;
- Permanent strategic planning;
- Intelligence led policing;
- Enhancing reactive capability.
Under the direct command of the Commissioner of Police who is accountable to the Prime Minister, the MPF is made up of 11 specialized Police Branches with a total strength of over 12,000 men and women. The Commissioner of Police is assisted by other Deputy Commissioners and Assistant Commissioners who are responsible for each department.
